More and more foreigners are living in Eindhoven and there are even families of several generations whose origins are outside the city and the country. Today, the proportion of foreigners is almost 30% of the population. Most of them are professionals with specialised training who are in demand for various jobs in Eindhoven.

In our survey Eindhoven did not achieve any relevant positions in the different categories taken into account in the results.

23RD / EINDHOVEN

Eindhoven is known as the city of light among the many cities in the Netherlands. It is the fifth largest city in the country and is also a place with a wealth of industry, being the place where the Philips company was founded. This has led many professionals to choose to live there. Overall, it ranks at the bottom of our overall ranking, scoring lukewarm in most categories and with a considerable distance to other cities in the country.

CLIMATE

Not one of the best climates in Europe. It is difficult to predict and unstable and is often quite humid, with rainfall that can occur at any time. Winters are cold and wet, with a really high level of wind that makes it difficult to get through the season in a pleasant way.

It is necessary to dress warmly in several layers to avoid problems with the temperature changes that can occur. Also, never forget an umbrella even in the drier seasons.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Public transport is not normally used for commuting to work, except in cases where offices are located far from the city centre.

Eindhoven’s compact size makes it ideal for cycling. This helps to save on transport costs. However, it is also possible to use an extensive bus service that connects the more distant parts of the city.

EDUCATION

Even with a population of around 250,000 people, Eindhoven has a large selection of schools at various levels. This means that different parts of the city are covered by schools and students can easily reach them. It also means fewer classes than in other European cities.

The international schools that are present in the city include the Salto International School and the International School Eindhoven. The children of professionals who have moved to the city for work study here comfortably.

GASTRONOMY

Eindhoven’s food is mostly based on traditional Dutch dishes, so its food is very much in line with other parts of the Netherlands. However, some of the recipes are slightly modified according to regional tastes.

In any case, there are some specialities, such as worstenbroodje, a bread dough roll filled with meat, pork and various ingredients. Also of note are the asparagus brabantse Wal asperges, which offer a different take on the classic taste.

INTERNATIONAL CONNECTIONS

It is located at a minimal distance from the city, only 5-10 km depending on where you leave from. This helps to make it a very efficient international connection point, especially as it has a large number of flights to different countries.

It is called Eindhoven Airport, but was previously known as Welschap Airport. The airport can be reached by two bus lines, numbered 400 and 401, which provide a good connection.

SECURITY

Eindhoven is in line with other cities in the Netherlands, where the crime rate is very low and this makes for a very peaceful life.

The main problem that residents have to watch out for is bicycle theft. If good locks are not put in place, it is possible that the bicycle may disappear. Beyond this there are usually no major problems even when moving around at night in places that are not too frequented by other people.

SUSTAINABILITY

The city’s community acts in a coordinated way to reduce pollution and to go for energy methods that are environmentally friendly.

The aim is for Eindhoven Airport to use all-natural resources by 2030 and to improve its position in the world ranking. So far our respondents have not chosen Eindhoven as one of the most sustainable cities, but in a few years the situation could change.

COST OF LIVING

Salaries in Eindhoven are lower than those in Amsterdam, but the Netherlands takes care to balance the cost of living by reducing the prices of some of the most common expenses.

As a result, rent is 30% cheaper than in Amsterdam and the price of food and other goods is reduced by more than 13%. As a result, you can live comfortably in the city on the salary of a local job.

CULTURE

Over the years, many entities have worked to make Eindhoven stand out culturally and attract the attention of its residents. In the past, the Philips company founded several cultural institutions that have helped the city a lot.

In addition, there are a number of museums within easy reach. The Eindhoven Museum sets itself apart from other representative museums in European cities by being designed in the open air, which allows for a very different experience. Other good museums include the Van Abbemuseum, DAF Museum or the Philips Gloeilampenfabriekje anno 1891.

LEISURE

Eindhoven has always attracted a large number of students from all over the Netherlands and this has meant that the city has to offer a level of leisure facilities that cater to their needs.

You can go out after work through the Market Square area, but the best place to find pubs is Stratumseind. In contrast to this, the city has huge green areas that give you the ability to picnic and have fun in total relaxation, such as the Stadswandelpark. Not to be forgotten are the many music festivals throughout the year,
