1ST / COPENHAGUEN
Copenhagen’s short- and long-term plans to become a more sustainable city have been underway for years and as such have been recognised in the 1st position in the ranking of the most sustainable cities. This element has not only helped Copenhagen to score well in this section, but has also led to an excellent perception of climate coherence or manageability within the city.
2ND / THE HAGUE
The Hague has been working for some time to become one of the most sustainable cities in the world and nowadays its initiatives fall into four distinct blocks: local actions, vegetarian philosophy, vegan food and circular economy. All citizens share these goals and work together to achieve them.
3RD / BARCELONA
Les efforts de tous les habitants de Barcelone pour rendre la région totalement durable ont fait résonner le nom de la ville dans le monde entier. La capitale de la Catalogne est réputée pour ses efforts en faveur d'une durabilité maximale, ce qui explique qu'elle ait réussi à s'imposer, selon les répondants à notre enquête, à la troisième place du classement.
4TH / PARIS
Le gouvernement parisien s'est engagé à faire de la capitale française un lieu très durable. À cette fin, des projets de plantations vertes ont été mis en œuvre pour aider à générer un air plus propre sans autant de carbone et de polluants.
5TH / BRUSSELS
Brussels is focused on setting an example for other European cities with its decisions. Among other measures, it is trying to use energy wisely, to support green initiatives and to give more and more attention to environmentally responsible jobs. The design of green buildings helps to reduce the footprint and eliminate the presence of pollution in the streets. These initiatives have been recognised in the results collected, obtaining 5th place.
6TH / STOCKHOLM
It has been a long time since Stockholm made history when, in 2010, it launched environmental initiatives like no other European city had ever done before. Over the years it has continued that hard work and is recognised as the sixth best city in the ranking based on the responses of more than 25,000 respondents to our survey.
7TH / MADRID
The government has worked hard to put the capital at the top of the world’s sustainability rankings, which has led to it being awarded the title of the second most sustainable city on the planet. This has been achieved through strategic plans and adjustments that reduce energy consumption, optimise transport infrastructure and minimise pollution.
8TH / DUBLIN
Since 2016, Dublin started a plan to become a very sustainable city in order to set an example to other major cities in Europe. So far the results are showing good results and this has been reflected in the survey data, which shows that the city is ranked eighth in the top 10.
9TH / BERLIN
The German capital has long since decided to opt for a sustainable approach to all aspects of life in Berlin. Among citizens and the government, there is a strong advocate for living as green as possible, for vegetarian food and for lifestyles that help to protect the environment. This has created a favourable impression in our survey, in which Berlin ranks ninth for sustainability.
10TH / LISBON
Lisbon is recognised by respondents for demonstrating how to work as a sustainable city, but it must also be acknowledged that the Portuguese capital has slowed down in recent years and that other major European cities have taken note of how to act. Sustainability is becoming an increasingly competitive issue and this is demonstrated by the fact that no city should be satisfied with what it is already doing.
